Outlet for the Literacy Enrichment Achievement Program (LEAP-M.D.)

This site is dedicated to the Wynnefield West Digest, a monthly newspaper published and distributed to 60,000 readers in the Wynnefield & surrounding areas of

Philadelphia, PA from 1986-1994.  The publication  became the outlet for the

Literacy Enrichment Achievement Program (LEAP. M.D.) from 1991-1994

and its Youth Correspondents Network (YCN).

Our Story

We’ve loved every minute of our journey

An Idea Is Born

The Wynnefield West Digest newspaper was founded in the 1980s to provide information to the Wynnefield & surrounding communities.  Student writings and art from the area schools - Elementary through High School - became a regular feature.  That birthed the Youth Correspondents Network (YCN) and Literacy Enrichment Achievement Program (LEAP), a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization (2583131 PA).

LEAPin' with the Youth Correspondents Network

The YCN and LEAP expanded into six-week summer programs from 1991-1994 where teenage students were given a stipend to participate in a flurry of literacy Motivation and Development (M.D.) activities, culminating with their works being published in special editions of the Wynnefield West Digest.  Such a display of budding artistic talent!

One goal is to reach as many of the students, individuals and organizations that participated in and/or were featured in the special editions. What are they doing now?  The  outreach will expand as other Wynnefield West Digest issues are uploaded from the archives.

Another goal is to preserve the historical records and

make the archived newspapers accessible to the entire world.
